Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ Before Hiring Them | Sara Welburn Photography

Updated: Feb 7

Congratulations!! Getting married is amazing and incredible but the planning beforehand can also be incredibly stressful. And choosing the right wedding vendors is at the top of that list. With all the decisions you have to make about florals, bridesmaid gifts, decor, dresses, and more, it can be tempting to just pick the first DJ you find in your price range. But your DJ (or disc jockey) sets the entire mood for your wedding reception, so it's important to make the right choice, even if it takes a little more effort.

So to take some of the stress out of finding and choosing a DJ for your San Antonio wedding, I've made a list of what I, as a wedding photographer, think are the most important questions to ask your DJ before booking them for your wedding. Of course there are many questions you should ask your DJ, but these are ones I find many brides don't consider! I've also listed a few DJ's I've either worked with before or heard great things about from other trusted photographers who've worked with them.

1. How would you describe your style?

This question seems like common sense, but you'd be surprised how many couples book a DJ for their wedding and then regret it when their reception turns out differently than they'd hoped. If you're a bonafide country girl and you just want to party all night with your friends and family to Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, and Little Big Town, make sure to find a DJ that can help your reception reflect that!

2. Do you plan to use lighting or any other special effects?

Some professionals may plan to use fog machines or colorful lighting effects while some will just stick to the music and MC'ing. Make sure you know which style you prefer! If flashing colorful strobe lights aren't your thing, then either 1) make sure that the DJ will leave those at home or 2) choose a different DJ!

3. Are you prepared to act as the master of ceremonies?

It isn't guaranteed that your bandleader or DJ will introduce the speech givers, announce your first dance or tell people when dinner is served. Sometimes, a planner will do that or even the best man or maid of honor. Clarify this before you hire them.

4. Do you have liability insurance?

You and your guests need to be safe! If something crazy happens and the DJ's equipment explodes and causes a fire burning the venue to the ground (drastic, I know) you need to know that they have the insurance to pay for any medical bills you or your guests may have sustained.

5. How do you motivate a shy crowd to dance?

6. If the DJ scheduled for my event is unable to perform for some reason, do you have a backup replacement ready to go?

Many DJ companies have multiple disc jockeys that rotate through their booked events. You want to make sure that if your assigned disc jockey suddenly comes down with the stomach flu, they have a back up plan already in place that won't cause you unnecessary stress on your wedding day. You want to make sure that even if everything falls apart on their end, you won't have to even know because they'll take care of everything seamlessly.

7. How much would you charge for overtime?

There have been multiple times where the timing of the wedding/reception gets off and the couple asks the photographer and DJ to stay an extra hour (if their venue allows). You need to know what that extra hour is going to cost you ahead of time!

8. Are you familiar with or have you played at my venue before? Will I be responsible for renting anything extra you need at this venue?

If the DJ has already played at you wedding venue then they should be very familiar with what equipment they'll need. If they've never performed at you venue, they may need extra equipment to make their set up work. You need ton know ahead of time if you'll be getting charged extra for the renting of any extra equipment.

Of course there are many questions you should ask your DJ, but these are ones that can have a massive impact if you don't ask them! Take some stress out of your wedding planning and ask these questions when you email or meet with your prospective wedding djs! What other questions do you think are important to ask your wedding dj before hiring them? Let me know in the comments!
